Body of Tree
I have always loved trees. I have always felt connected to trees, known they were special and would be special to me. Probably because everyone's first drawings are of trees we can tend to "forget them" a little or we just don't pay enough attention to them and how they grow and change with the seasons or if we are aware it's only a casual awareness. When I started the "Body of Tree Series" back in the '90's in Portland Oregon, the first drawings came as a result of a protest at trees been cut down, but it transpired that the trees were all inflicted with a deadly disease and for safety they had to be cut down. Before they disappeared I got to know them with my sketch pad. The drawings manifested in different media and some developed figurative forms which I started to have fun with and played with but ultimately I felt I tapped into a magic in the trees.
Later when I moved back home to Ireland the beautiful trees of Donadea Forest lent themselves to the same scrutiny and the series developed with the "Nymphs". I'm not ashamed to admit I love to hug trees. But I don't do it as often as I used to (or possibly should). I've embarrassed my boys on numerous occasions. Getting to know my wonderful cousins from Australia again I was delighted to hear that they remembered me (it was 10 years) and called me "The Tree 'ugger" with their delightful accent. I was chuffed. I've been drawing and painting trees again since the "Apple Tree" - something new might be developing, who knows.... but it's wonderful to really look at trees and it's amazing to feel their energy when you touch them.
Must make time to do some tree hugging......
